Innovative care built on trust

Yale New Haven Health’s (YNHH’s) advanced care model propelled it from a single academic medical center to a respected system of regional inpatient campuses, several dozen ambulatory sites, and a physician foundation. Shepley Bulfinch has created solutions that compliment that innovative strategy for more than 30 years.
In the past decade alone, Shepley Bulfinch has planned and designed more than two million sf of new construction and renovation for the system.
We’ve worked alongside YNHH leadership since 1988 to develop an overall campus strategy that anticipates new programs, as well as maximizes the utilization of existing space—simultaneously planning for future growth and removal of antiquated assets.

The York New Haven Delivery Network—a 1,541-bed dual-campus hospital in New Haven—is home to the 500,000-sf Smilow Cancer Hospital, designed by Shepley Bulfinch and completed in 2010. Earlier projects include a similarly sized Children’s Hospital and multiple renovations.
Since acquiring the 500-bed Hospital of Saint Raphael in 2012, we’ve worked to connect the two campuses to meet YNHH’s progressive vision for enhancing the lives of people in the region by providing access to high-value, patient-centered care. Planning and design work has included significant infrastructure upgrades, a master plan that creates clinical services alignment between the two campuses, as well as long-term development of current and potential spaces.
Born out of a larger strategy, Shepley Bulfinch has been a partner in crafting and implementing sustainable healthcare delivery with YNHH for decades. Most recently, we’ve been focused on infrastructure upgrades, departmental renovations, and a master plan for Bridgeport Hospital—added to the System in 1996.
“Thanks to careful planning by a dedicated multidisciplinary system team over 13 months, the move-in process went exceptionally smoothly, considering this was one of the most ambitious and complex new building initiatives in the Bridgeport Hospital and Yale New Haven Health in years.” – Gina Calder, executive director of clinical services at Bridgeport Hospital
Patient-centered care delivery is expressed through the building’s use of biophilic design, bringing nature in via the expansive boomerang-shaped glass façade.
As part of Bridgeport Hospital’s evolution, Park Avenue Medical Center is an exemplary design for state-of-the-art outpatient care. Completed by Shepley Bulfinch in 2016, it integrates Ambulatory Surgery, Cancer Treatment, Radiology, and Breast Care into one three-story facility.
