At the BLDGS=DATA symposium in New York this spring, the discussion focused on strategies for harnessing the massive amount of data made available by modern technology. An increased capacity for analysis has led to immense data generation and an unprecedented ability to identify correlations. The AEC industry today is grappling with ways to make the best use of it and to develop standard processes for leveraging and sharing it.

Virtual reality is a powerful tool for designers. While still in the early stages of development in architecture, with this tool, we can offer our clients a familiar language for understanding design, beyond the interpretation of 2D drawings or even 3D models. Sharing this type of experience eliminates the need to explain what a space is or how it functions. It allows us to be a fly on the wall, and gives us greater insight into how people will intuitively perceive and navigate through spaces.

Everyone in the design community is talking about Virtual Reality, and that’s not surprising. It seems like every new design tool and technology comes with a promise to help us work more efficiently and more effectively. We’ve all heard that producing in a BIM (Building Information Modeling) environment is drastically different than producing in CAD, but it was the contrast between “novice” and “experienced” BIM that really surprised me. At times I almost laugh out loud, thinking about how I did things when I started and how I do them now. I can remember sitting at my desk, arm hurting (seriously) from squeezing my mouse trying to get Revit to behave. The one thought constantly running through my head: “There has to be an easier way.”

The University of New Mexico’s Science & Mathematics Learning Center in Albuquerque was dedicated on March 4, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and building tour.
