New building defines the academic library of the future, receives first place award from Library Journal

Earlier this month, members of Shepley Bulfinch’s project team were in Richmond for the dedication of the new Cabell Library expansion at Virginia Commonwealth University.

BOSTON, MA — Massey Cancer Center’s new Research Laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University opened its doors on May 6th in honor of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Goodwin, Jr. for their generous support.
Designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, the Goodwin lab facility is designed to promote greater collaboration and attract new researchers to its growing research program. The VCU Massey Cancer Center, one of 61 National Cancer Institute-designated research institutions, is VCU’s focal point for basic and clinical cancer research, education, prevention and treatment.

In a February 29 ceremony attended by members of the university community, legislative leaders, and donors, the University of Houston marked the start of construction for Health and Biomedical Sciences Building 2 (HBSB 2), designed by Shepley Bulfinch and built by Tellepsen Builders.

The University of Houston’s Health and Biomedical Sciences Building took home top honors in the Medical category at the Houston Business Journal Landmark Awards last week. The winners of the awards, which celebrate Houston’s most influential real estate projects, were announced in a sold-out event at the Houstonian Hotel on April 24.

The design thinking behind the facade of the University of Houston’s Health and Biomedical Science Building is “More than skin deep,” as detailed in an online feature in the current issue of Texas Architect.
Speaking with writer Jack Murphy, Shepley Bulfinch architect Luke Voiland discussed the materiality of the facade, including the fritted glass and the articulated precast system that creates a series of shifting patterns of light and shadow as the sun crosses the sky.
The Health and Biomedical Science Building was dedicated earlier this year.
