ecoFLEX wins 2009 Unbuilt Architecture Award

A Shepley Bulfinch design team has won a prestigious 2009 Unbuilt Architecture Design Award from the Boston Society of Architects.

ecoFLEX, the winning project, was one of ten winning entries chosen from more than 90 submissions in the BSA’s Unbuilt Architecture Design Awards program, which is open to architects from around the world. It was designed for the Tall Emblem Structure competition in Dubai earlier this year.

The Shepley Bulfinch design team of Angela Watson, Luke Voiland, Lauren Deck, and Allan Donnelly, joined by Paul Kassabian of Simpson Gumpertz and Heger, will be honored in November at the BSA Jurors’ Forum during the Build Boston, where the winning boards will be displayed.

By now you’ve surely heard about the worldwide phenomenon that is Pokemon Go. For the uninitiated, it is a smartphone game requiring players to move around the real world in order to find and capture fantasy creatures called Pokemon. Once encountered, players see the digitally-created Pokemon overlaid onto the live camera feed of their smartphones.

Architecture showcase highlights innovative hospital

What happens when you integrate sophisticated cancer treatment with the healing power of nature and art? Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital is the subject of a three-page feature in the September 2010 Architecture Showcase in Healthcare Design magazine. The showcase presentation draws particular attention to the role of art in healing and the use of evidence-based design at Smilow.

The hospital, which includes a eighth-floor healing garden (photo, right) among its innovative sustainable design features, is on target for LEED certification.
