The green roof of the Decker Quadrangle at Johns Hopkins University will be on show April 29 on a walking tour offered as part of the sixth annual Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities conference in Baltimore. The tour, “Midtown Baltimore by Foot”, will take conference participants on a two-mile walk through Johns Hopkins’ Homewood campus and the adjoining Remington neighborhood.
One of the largest green roofs in the state of Maryland, the 75,000 sf grassy quadrangle is a defining element of Johns Hopkins’ Homewood campus while screening a 604-space parking garage beneath. The Quadrangle and adjacent Computational Science Building and Mason Hall were completed last fall and dedicated in October.

LEED certification for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center-Detroit sends a powerful message: helping children grow up healthy starts with a healthy environment. The Center, which was completed in 2012, is the first LEED-certified project on the hospital’s urban campus.

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Sherman Hospital are among five healthcare facilities recognized for their environmentally responsive design in “Code Green: Examining the Prognosis for Sustainability in Healthcare,” in the August issue of Eco-Structure magazine.
Sherman Hospital opened its new healthcare campus in Elgin, Illinois, in December. Shouldn’t the design of a healthcare facility begin with creating a healthy environment? That’s the argument Angela Watson makes in her article, “LEED by example: Using sustainable design to create a healing environment,” which appears in the January 2010 issue of Healthcare Design magazine. In the article, she discusses the process behind Concord Hospital’s 2008 expansion and renovation, and the hospital’s subsequent receipt of LEED certification, the first in northern New England to be so recognized.

The DEC Center at Philadelphia University has received LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council and a shout-out in two design publications.
“Philadelphia University is a leader in both sustainability education and practices on our campus,” said university president Stephen Spinelli Jr. “These are critically important issues in the 21st century.”
