UnCommon phenomenon: LEED Gold for CA Student Housing project in Eugene

LEED GoldUnCommon, the student housing complex in Eugene, Oregon, developed by CA Student Living and designed by Shepley Bulfinch, has received LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council. This is CA’s first LEED Certified project and the latest in Shepley Bulfinch’s portfolio of highly sustainable buildings.

“We’re responding to changes in the urban housing market for college students and graduates,” said JJ Smith, COO of CA Student Living. “They’re looking for a smaller environmental footprint and well-designed spaces close to the life of the campus and the city.”

Wabash College breaks ground on student housing project

Construction is now underway at Wabash College for a new 136-bed student housing complex on the College’s Crawfordsville, Indiana, campus. The $15 million plan includes the construction of two 38-bed halls, two 16-bed lodges, and two duplex-style townhomes with 12 beds each. Shepley Bulfinch designed the six-building complex.

The new housing, which will be sited along the campus’ west side, includes increased parking and links to the main campus through walkways and landscaping.

Student housing project underway at Purdue

Student housing - West Lafayette, INConstruction is now underway for new student housing being developed by Campus Acquisitions near Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The project received final approval from the city of West Lafayette earlier this month.

The development will transform an under-utilized urban parcel with small commercial structures and an open parking field into a vibrant part of the city landscape. Urban mixed-use complex wins Innovator Award

CA Student Living - FuseFuse, the CA Student Living mixed-use project in West Lafayette, Indiana, has won Student Housing Business’ Innovator Award for Best Implementation of Mixed-Use in New Development or Renovation. Shepley Bulfinch designed the ambitious project, which creates a lively small city on a large city block. The award was presented at the Interface Student Housing conference last month.

Icon Plaza honored at LA Commercial Real Estate Awards

The Icon Plaza at USC took home Silver in the LA Business Journal’s 2013 Commercial Real Estate Awards, which were announced on February 25. The 162,000 square foot student residence and retail development, which won in the mixed-use category, brings much-needed housing for USC students at the heart of the USC campus.

“In addition to creating a distinctive and prominent landmark, it was important that the design of the Icon Plaza reinforce a sense of connection to the USC campus,” said Jonah Busick, who oversaw construction and supplemental design.

Xavier’s new digs: dorm terrace is dining hall’s green roof

Bishop Fenwick Place, Xavier University’s new residential and dining complex, was dedicated last month in a ceremony that celebrated the transformational residence and dining complex on the Cincinnati campus.

Fenwick Place is home to 535 sophomores with suite-style living in four connected wings that rise above a green terrace. The terrace also serves as the roof of Hoff Dining Commons, the university’s new central dining facility. How many units of affordable housing can you fit into Shepley Bulfinch’s Boston office? The answer is 429, in a manner of speaking – or at least that was the case on the evening of May 4.

That’s when Shepley hosted the 11th annual Greater Boston Affordable Housing Development Competition awards ceremony. Sponsors of the design competition include the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, the Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA), and the Boston Society of Architects.

Shepley hosts affordable housing design competition event

Shepley hosted the Greater Boston 2010 Affordable Housing Development Competition awards ceremony last night. Sponsors of the design competition, now in its tenth year, include the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, the Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA), and the BSA.

Five teams of graduate students in architecture, planning, business, and law, who partnered with developers and design and financial mentors, presented proposals for projects in Brookline, Somerville, Salem, Lowell, and Boston.
