Elgin celebrates new Sherman Hospital

sherman_hospital_nightELGIN, IL – Sherman Hospital celebrated the mid-December opening of its new campus with a gala event last night., where Sherman administrators, community leaders, donors, and architects celebrated the imminent completion of the hospital.

The hospital is hosting community tours today. The ‘Tree of Life”, in the atrium (pictured here), and hospital’s 15-acre geothermal lake, are among the features that visitors will see. The use of the geothermal lake is expected to save the hospital $1 million annually over conventional heating and cooling costs.

ELGIN, IL – Sherman Hospital will host a community open house on December 6 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm to celebrate the December 15 landmark opening of its new hospital and its 154-acre campus. The hospital is organizing 25- and 60-minute tours of the new facility throughout the open house.

Visitors arriving at the hospital will pass by the manifold room of Sherman’s signature geothermal lake, circled by a walking path and landscaped with native plantings. The 15-acre lake will save the hospital more than $1 million in heating and cooling costs ...[more]

Sherman Hospital in Midwest Construction Top 20 Starts

Midwest Construction Magazine has placed the Sherman Hospital replacement campus project in Elgin, Illinois, eighth on its list of Top 20 Project Starts.

The $310 million project, which is located on a 154-acre site, includes a 650,000 s.f. hospital facility and a 100,000 s.f. medical office building.

One innovative aspect of the project is a fifteen-acre manmade geothermal lake, which is projected to generate substantial energy savings for hospital operations.

Shepley Bulfinch is working with associate architects Loebl, Schlossman & Hackl of Chicago on the Sherman project, which is scheduled for completion in 2009.

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Sherman Hospital are among five healthcare facilities recognized for their environmentally responsive design in “Code Green: Examining the Prognosis for Sustainability in Healthcare,” in the August issue of Eco-Structure magazine.

Sherman Hospital opened its new healthcare campus in Elgin, Illinois, in December. BSA Design AwardsTwo Shepley Bulfinch projects were recognized for their design at the Boston Society of Architects’ 2014 Design Awards Gala on January 29.

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven took home an honor award for healthcare facility design. Director Cathy Lange accepted the ‘Hobson’ for the project team at last week’s ceremony.

In their remarks, the design jury noted how “the architect delivered with clean, simple, and timeless design… The exterior design is very sensitive, with arrays of windows, terracotta screens, and glass stair towers combining for an elegant urban expression.”

Concord Hospital receives LEED certification

CONCORD, NH – Concord Hospital has been awarded LEED certification for its East & North Wing addition and renovation, the first hospital in northern New England to do so.

The project’s design maximizes daylight and views with green roofs and courtyard gardens while skylights bring light deep into treatment spaces. The canopied entrance includes a waiting area that overlooks a garden and the drop-off area and a roof garden that is accessible from the ICU. On patient floors almost all spaces have access to natural light and views, while garden courtyards create a buffer from the road. Yale-New Haven Hospital opens bariatric unit

Yale-New Haven Hospital has opened the newest specialized inpatient unit for bariatric surgery patients in southern New England, allowing the hospital’s Bariatric Center to deliver tailored care for patients undergoing life-changing surgery. The dedicated 15-bed unit designed by Shepley Bulfinch is located on the hospital’s Saint Raphael’s Campus and opened with a ribbon-cutting on January 5.

The bariatric unit is an added and important resource to Yale-New Haven’s team of bariatric surgeons. The new private inpatient rooms meet the vision of creating a patient-centered healing environment with specific focus on patient safety.
