Ground broken for new Candler School of Theology at Emory

Atlanta, GA – Ground was broken today for the first phase of a plan at the heart of the Emory campus for the Candler School of Theology and the Center for Ethics. The new complex will comprise a cluster of buildings that act as a gateway to Emory’s historic quadrangle.

The first phase of the project to break ground is a structure that will be located adjacent to the School’s current home. The 70,000 s.f., $34 million structure will house classrooms, faculty offices, administrative space and two large lecture halls, as well as The Center for Ethics.

Plans Presented for Duke Law School Construction

Shepley Bulfinch’s latest project on the Duke University campus is the subject of an article in today’s issue of the Duke University Law School paper, “The Devil’s Advocate”. In the article, Professor Tom Metzloff, co-chair of the school’s building committee, unveiled plans for the design and construction of the Star Commons, an addition to the law school building.

The new Commons will provide the school with public space, including casual seating for 150 on the main floor and, as a forum for major public speaking events, seating for up to 500.

It is scheduled for completion at the end of 2008.

Ground broken for Ashley Hall library and science center

CHARLESTON, SC – The Ashley Hall School celebrated the start of construction on its new Library/ Media and Science Center in a ceremony held today on the school’s historic Charleston campus.

When it is completed the 20,000 s.f. building will house a new library and media center for this independent girls’ school, quadrupling the size of the school’s existing library facilities. A science center will occupy the building’s top floor, as well as an additional 4,500 sf of renovated space on the top floor of adjacent Lane Hall.

Ashley Hall selects Shepley Bulfinch for new master plan

BOSTON, MA — Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott has been selected to create a new master plan for Ashley Hall, an independent girls school in Charleston, South Carolina.

The master plan will allow for modest growth in the future and include a reevaluation of the existing campus to support anticipated programmatic changes that reflect the school’s strategic plan. The master plan is scheduled to be completed in six to nine months.

The master planning team includes Jonathan Ross, AIA, Principal in Charge; Alexander Howe, AIA, Principal for Design; Susan Hoadley, AIA, Project Manager and Planner; and Anne Newman, Programmer.

LEED 2015 GOLD medallion 150x150The US Green Building Council has awarded LEED Gold Certification to The Rebecca M. Sykes Wellness Center at Phillips Academy. It is the second LEED-certified building on the school’s Andover, Massachusetts, campus.

The sustainable design of the 17,000 square foot center reinforces the Center’s emphasis on health and well-being. “This is another testament to this beautiful new Wellness Center supporting Andover’s larger initiatives in individual and community health,” said Phillips Academy Medical Director Dr. Amy Patel.

HBX Live! Breaking classroom boundaries

As its name promises, HBX Live is a virtual classroom designed to reproduce the intimacy and synchronous interaction of Harvard Business School’s famed case study method in a digital environment.

Participants from around the globe can log in concurrently and join real-time, case-based sessions with HBS faculty who teach from the HBX Live studio, located in the Boston-based facility of public broadcaster WGBH. In the custom-designed studio, a high-resolution video wall mimics the amphitheater-style seating of an HBS classroom, where up to 60 participants are displayed on individual screens simultaneously.
