Colby College science facility wraps up design

Design is now near completion for a new science facility for Colby College, with plans to break ground later this year.

The 36,400 square foot building on the Waterville, Maine, campus, will be home to the departments of computer science, mathematics and statistics, and psychology, with teaching and research space that will include robotics and psychology labs, seminar rooms, and classrooms.

In keeping with its commitment to the environment, Colby will pursue LEED Silver certification on the new building. It is scheduled for completion in 2014.

Today’s lab building by the numbers

Shepley Bulfinch undertook a 3-month long study where we examined science facilities from over a 100 colleges and universities across the country. We gathered data that details departmental usage, building efficiency and other key metrics that drive the design of science buildings. In particular, we tracked usage related to interdisciplinary research and STEM trends across higher education.

Key insights included:

  • Buildings are 37% larger while undergoing a 15% reduction in square footage per department.
  • There has been a 260% increase in the space allotted to dry labs. This dramatic increase represents new types of research driven by technology that does not require hoods and benches, including computational biology, computer science, and robotics.

LEED Gold for Colby’s Davis Science Center

LEED Gold

Sometimes the best lesson in environmental responsibility on campus is the academic building around you.

For Colby College, its commitment to sustainable design and practice was affirmed when the Davis Science Center received LEED Gold Certification this fall from the US Green Building Council.

The Center is Shepley Bulfinch’s eighth project to be LEED Gold Certified.

The design responds to the Georgian architecture of Colby’s existing campus while incorporating best practices in sustainable design, including local sourcing of materials. The dominant exterior material is water struck ‘Colby Blend’ brick, manufactured by the same nearby brickyard that ...[more]

Where the jobs are: Time magazine sees the future at Johns Hopkins

The robotics lab at Johns Hopkins’ School of Computer Science and Engineering gets a shout-out in the January 17 issue of Time magazine. The article, “Where the jobs are,” discusses the sectors for job growth in the current economy. Johns Hopkins has established training programs to better match the skills of Baltimore residents with the requirement of the sophisticated bioengineering jobs now being created.
