Space utilization creates a buzz at university planning conference

MONTREAL, CANADA – A presentation by senior planner Annie Newman, “Space Utilization – Not Just for Classrooms Anymore”, was a hot topic at the 43rd annual conference of the Society for University Planning (SCUP).

The SRO crowd at the session was testimony to the increased interest in space utilization as a cost-effective and sustainable strategy as colleges and universities respond to growing space needs on college campuses.

The presentation, which Annie gave together with MIT campus planner Robert Boes, was among the subjects highlighted by Scott Carlson’s coverage of the conference in this week’s Chronicle of Higher Education.

Colgate University library featured in College Planning & Management

The May issue of College Planning and Management features the opening of Colgate University’s newly renovated Case Library and the Geyer Center for Information Technology.

Located at the base of the hilltop campus, the Library features a 24-hour study space, a cafe, and video conference center. Flexible workrooms are located on the new top level, which is directly accessible from the upper campus. A “Main Street” traverses the main library floor, connecting with campus pathways and creating an inviting campus portal. The renovation features an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) that provides archival-quality storage for 500,000 volumes. The development of new zoning in a sensitive central district adjoining the University of Arizona in Tucson was one of nine Pima County projects honored by the Metropolitan Pima Alliance at its annual Common Ground awards earlier this month. The Main Gate Overlay District received top honors in in the Public Policy category.

The new district establishes a zoning overlay that preserves historic structures within its boundaries while allow new growth and development with the density necessary for the project to succeed.
