LEED Gold for Phillips Academy wellness center

LEED 2015 GOLD medallion 150x150The US Green Building Council has awarded LEED Gold Certification to The Rebecca M. Sykes Wellness Center at Phillips Academy. It is the second LEED-certified building on the school’s Andover, Massachusetts, campus.

The sustainable design of the 17,000 square foot center reinforces the Center’s emphasis on health and well-being. “This is another testament to this beautiful new Wellness Center supporting Andover’s larger initiatives in individual and community health,” said Phillips Academy Medical Director Dr. Amy Patel.

Sparkle+Chime: Celebrating arts and culture in Boston

Sparkle+Chime BostonOctober has brought magic to Evans Way Park in Boston, where Shepley Bulfinch’s art installation Sparkle+Chime has filled the trees with patterns of light and sound.

Sparkle+Chime is part of the Fenway Alliance’s 2014 Opening Our Doors celebration on October 13. Hundreds of small suspended mirrored discs and lightweight metal rings have been suspended from selected trees in the park. Sunlight refracting off the discs creates shifting patterns of light across the trees and ground, with the gentle tinkling of chimes as the rings play against the discs in the breeze. Courthouse design book features Worcester Trial Court

Shepley Bulfinch’s Worcester Trial Court (2007) is one of 95 courthouse projects nationwide selected for inclusion in Retrospective of Courthouse Design 2001-2010, published by the National Center for State Courts. The book was officially launched at Designing For Justice. the international conference on justice design, hosted in Boston by the AIA Academy of Architecture for Justice.

Worcester Trial Court is the first fully consolidated courthouse in the state, and was one of the first to employ court modernization technology and sustainable features.

Martha Rothman named consulting principal

Healthcare design leader Martha Rothman FAIA, LEED AP, has joined Shepley Bulfinch as a consulting principal.

In announcing the appointment, Shepley Bulfinch president Carole Wedge said, “The synergy of Martha’s experience and Shepley’s portfolio of health care and institutional work couldn’t be stronger. This is a tremendous opportunity for us and for our clients.”

Martha brings more than 40 years of experience in the planning and design of healthcare and academic science facilities. She co-founded Rothman Partners in 1969, growing the firm to a staff of more than 60 by the mid-1990s. In 2005 the ...[more]

Principal Sandy Howe awarded honorary doctorate

brooklyn_college_BROOKLYN, NY – Principal Alexander (Sandy) Howe, one of Shepley’s senior designers, received an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from Brooklyn College as part of the school’s commencement ceremony earlier today. The degree was awarded in recognition of his design achievements in academic architecture, including the Brooklyn College Library, which was completed in 2003.

In addition to Brooklyn College, Sandy’s recent and current clients include the University of Notre Dame, the University of New Mexico, and Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
