Sparkle+Chime: Celebrating arts and culture in Boston

Sparkle+Chime BostonOctober has brought magic to Evans Way Park in Boston, where Shepley Bulfinch’s art installation Sparkle+Chime has filled the trees with patterns of light and sound.

Sparkle+Chime is part of the Fenway Alliance’s 2014 Opening Our Doors celebration on October 13. Hundreds of small suspended mirrored discs and lightweight metal rings have been suspended from selected trees in the park. Sunlight refracting off the discs creates shifting patterns of light across the trees and ground, with the gentle tinkling of chimes as the rings play against the discs in the breeze. Sparkle & Chime art installation

It’s dusk on an evening in October, and as you walk through Evans Way Park in Boston’s Fenway, you are accompanied by ethereal chiming and shimmering reflections in the trees above you.

The Fenway Alliance selected Sparkle & Chime, designed by architect Jean Kim of Shepley Bulfinch, as the audiovisual installation at Evans Way Park for several weeks in October. The installation is part of the Fenway Alliance’s 13th annual Opening Our Doors, which will be held on October 13.

Campbell law school opening generates buzz

RALEIGH, NC – Campbell University opened the doors to the new home of the Wiggins School of Law today, giving Raleigh its first law school. The school had previously been located on the university campus in nearby Buies Creek.

Law School dean Melissa Essary and Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker welcomed students to the new school, which its13 classrooms, 175-seat auditorium and 25,000 square foot library. In addition, the Raleigh division of the North Carolina Business Court will be co-located with the school, giving students the opportunity for hands-on legal experience.

What does it take to make magic in a park?

This fall Shepley created Sparkle+Chime, an art installation made up of over 3600 small mirrors and discs suspended from the trees to create dancing patterns of light and delicate chiming. The making of Sparkle+Chime required an all-out office effort led by mostly junior staff, and drew on the diverse experience – from rock climbing to jewelry making – of the core production team. Show Low Public Library on track for summer 2010 opening

Construction continues on the new public library in Show Low, Arizona, with an anticipated opening this summer.

Designed by Merzproject of Phoenix, now a studio of Shepley Bulfinch, the library uses masonry and laminated timber construction that reflects the wood barn tradition of the region’s White Mountains. The design reflects an environmentally conscious approach to the project. A 150-foot long clerestory window brings daylight deep into the main hall, while other sustainable features include the use low-VOC and recycled-content finishes, high-efficiency plumbing and mechanical equipment, and regional materials, such as Arizona stone.

Lovett School “goes green” with middle school opening

Lovett_MS_ext_1_NaniaATLANTA, GA – The Portman Family Middle School was dedicated at The Lovett School today in a ceremony that drew attention to the school’s commitment to environmental stewardship. From the building’s design and operations to its students’ curriculum, sustainability is integrated throughout the 75,000 s.f. school, which opened for classes in September.

The facility provides sixth through eighth grade students with a technology-rich learning environment, including science labs, a computer lab, art and drama studios, collaborative study rooms, and a 500-seat multi-purpose room.

Ground broken for Oishei Children’s Hospital

Oishei Children's HospitalHealth care for the children and families of Western New York took a major leap forward October 8, as Kaleida Health held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, designed by Shepley Bulfinch. The new hospital will replace the current Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.

Physicians, employees, donors, elected officials, and other dignitaries were on hand to kick off construction on the new $270 million facility. Lt. Governor Robert Duffy was the event’s keynote speaker.
