Mary Hale presented with 2015 AIA Associates Award

Mary Hale, Assoc. AIAMary Hale, Assoc. AIA, was presented with the AIA Associates Award in a ceremony at the AIA’s annual Convention in Atlanta this week. The award is the highest honor given to individual associate AIA members in recognition of their leadership qualities and commitment to the design profession and the wider community.

“Mary is a dynamic, entrepreneurial bridge builder,” Shepley Bulfinch President Carole Wedge, FAIA, said. “She is truly exceptional in her ability to connect the dots between design, practice, and community.”

Boston park will ‘Sparkle & Chime’ with Shepley art installation

Sparkle & Chime art installation

It’s dusk on an evening in October, and as you walk through Evans Way Park in Boston’s Fenway, you are accompanied by ethereal chiming and shimmering reflections in the trees above you.

The Fenway Alliance selected Sparkle & Chime, designed by architect Jean Kim of Shepley Bulfinch, as the audiovisual installation at Evans Way Park for several weeks in October. The installation is part of the Fenway Alliance’s 13th annual Opening Our Doors, which will be held on October 13.

LEED Gold for Phillips Academy wellness center

LEED 2015 GOLD medallion 150x150The US Green Building Council has awarded LEED Gold Certification to The Rebecca M. Sykes Wellness Center at Phillips Academy. It is the second LEED-certified building on the school’s Andover, Massachusetts, campus.

The sustainable design of the 17,000 square foot center reinforces the Center’s emphasis on health and well-being. “This is another testament to this beautiful new Wellness Center supporting Andover’s larger initiatives in individual and community health,” said Phillips Academy Medical Director Dr. Amy Patel.

Sparkle+Chime: Celebrating arts and culture in Boston

Sparkle+Chime BostonOctober has brought magic to Evans Way Park in Boston, where Shepley Bulfinch’s art installation Sparkle+Chime has filled the trees with patterns of light and sound.

Sparkle+Chime is part of the Fenway Alliance’s 2014 Opening Our Doors celebration on October 13. Hundreds of small suspended mirrored discs and lightweight metal rings have been suspended from selected trees in the park. Sunlight refracting off the discs creates shifting patterns of light across the trees and ground, with the gentle tinkling of chimes as the rings play against the discs in the breeze. Rural Studio’s enduring lessons

It’s not all about you.

That was the first lesson I learned in architecture school. Kicking off my architectural education at Auburn with the Rural Studio showed me the power of selfless design and taught me other invaluable life and professional lessons. For more than 20 years, the Rural Studio program has given architecture students like me a hands-on education, designing and building homes and community structures for underserved communities in rural Alabama.

The Boole Postgraduate Research Library at University College Cork in Ireland has received a “High Commendation” from the Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) in the Society’s 2010 Library Design Awards, announced earlier this month.
