Shepley Bulfinch is pleased to welcome seminal design leader Scott Slarsky, who has joined the firm as a director.
In announcing the appointment, president Carole Wedge said, “Scott is an exciting new design voice for Shepley Bulfinch, with passion, vision, and a deep understanding of how design can provide clarity of purpose and mission during times of institutional growth and change.”

We are saddened to announce the passing of Garry Baker, former Principal, Chief Operating Officer, and member of the Board of Directors of Shepley Bulfinch, on February 18.
Garry was a leader of the firm and our healthcare practice. In a career spanning more than 45 years his major interest was in team management and long-range planning. Garry was known for his long-standing client relationships and his self-proclaimed passion for the “orchestration of the team.”

The DEC Center at Philadelphia University has received LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council and a shout-out in two design publications.
“Philadelphia University is a leader in both sustainability education and practices on our campus,” said university president Stephen Spinelli Jr. “These are critically important issues in the 21st century.”

Shepley Bulfinch undertook a 3-month long study where we examined science facilities from over a 100 colleges and universities across the country. We gathered data that details departmental usage, building efficiency and other key metrics that drive the design of science buildings. In particular, we tracked usage related to interdisciplinary research and STEM trends across higher education.
Key insights included:
- Buildings are 37% larger while undergoing a 15% reduction in square footage per department.
- There has been a 260% increase in the space allotted to dry labs. This dramatic increase represents new types of research driven by technology that does not require hoods and benches, including computational biology, computer science, and robotics.

If we build it, will they come? This was one of the many questions posed this spring at the Learning Spaces Collaboratory Forum. Shepley Bulfinch, along with other national design and academic leaders, was invited to participate in a series of roundtables, concluding with a national forum in Washington, D.C. The challenge was lofty: to discuss and determine what is “now and next” in classroom design and instruction.
