A new home for cardiovascular care

Carle Foundation HospitalA new Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) opened to patients earlier this month at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, consolidating previously scattered cardiovascular services in one location.

The HVI, which provides inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular services, occupies the first two floors of the nine-story tower designed by Shepley Bulfinch. HVI’s new facilities include eight catheterization labs and the relocation of cardiac intensive care. The cardiovascular center stands alongside the neuroscience and intensive care units in the new building.

Construction underway at Carle Hospital

Carle Foundation Hospital has begun construction on its nine-story, 375,350 square-foot patient care tower, which will house the Carle Heart and Vascular Institute.

The $220 million facility will include space for advanced technology, improved facilities for direct patient care, and most importantly, a modern, comfortable environment for patients and their families. The tower will replace beds currently located in buildings constructed in the 1960s and 1970s.

Elgin celebrates new Sherman Hospital

sherman_hospital_nightELGIN, IL – Sherman Hospital celebrated the mid-December opening of its new campus with a gala event last night., where Sherman administrators, community leaders, donors, and architects celebrated the imminent completion of the hospital.

The hospital is hosting community tours today. The ‘Tree of Life”, in the atrium (pictured here), and hospital’s 15-acre geothermal lake, are among the features that visitors will see. The use of the geothermal lake is expected to save the hospital $1 million annually over conventional heating and cooling costs.

Promotions announced; Janette Blackburn named Principal

BOSTON, MA – In promotions announced today, Janette S. Blackburn AIA LEED AP, was named a new Principal at Shepley Bulfinch. Joining the firm in 1989, her work includes projects for the Avery Art and Architecture Library and the Teachers College Library at Columbia University, Princeton University’s Firestone Library, and Fondren Library at Rice University. Janette is a member of the American Library Association (ALA) and the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP).

It was also announced that Melissa Bennett, Katherine Faulkner, and Ann Newman have been named Associate Principals. Melissa, who joined the firm in 2007, is a senior member of the firm’s library practice. Katie, who has been ...[more]

Anderson Student Center begins construction

Construction begins today for the Anderson Student Center at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.

“The student center will serve as a wonderful gathering place that will tie together our north and south campuses,” said Father Dennis Dease, president. Jane Canney, vice president for student affairs, called the center “our living room – the real heart of the campus.”

Go-ahead for St. Thomas student center

The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, has given the green light for construction of the 210,000 s.f. Anderson Student Center, with plans to complete the project by the end of 2011.

The center will draw students crossing from the Quad into a lively three-story atrium filled with light and activity (image, right). Jane Canney, the University’s vice president of student affairs, said, “The student center will be our living room… the real heart of the campus.”

Shepley Bulfinch presented with award for Tennessee library

Shepley Bulfinch was presented with the Palladio Award on March 7 at the annual Traditional Building Conference in Boston. The award was presented for the Paul Barret, Jr, Library at Rhodes College in Memphis, which Shepley Bulfinch designed in association with the Virginia firm of Hanbury Evans Wright and Vlattas.

The project was one of ten recognized in the sixth annual Palladio Awards competition for outstanding work in traditional design. It will be featured in the June 2007 issue of Traditional Building magazine.
