2017 Howe Fellow Kate Hriczo is Set to Explore the UAE’s 50-Year Transformation

My childhood was spent roaming the globe, and I was affected early on by the human-built world… I have devoted my skills to the realization, through designs of enhancement of the natural environment, where buildings respond to their contextual conditions, and where they bring people together in social and intellectual contact in spaces that inspire and illuminate their activities. I have been fortunate to be asked to design buildings in all parts of our country and abroad, and continue to be fascinated by the opportunity to design within the requirements of different climates, cultures, histories and architectural heritage. ...[more]

Fourth impression of a Japanese garden

Tuesday, 24 December 2013

In the spirit of reflection that comes at this time of year, we share this contemplation from Barak Yaryan, Shepley Bulfinch’s 2013 Howe Traveling Fellow, who spent four weeks this past summer journeying through Japan.

I walk into a Samurai house in Kanazawa. It is a low, timber framed house with a dominant roof behind brown mud walls topped with black ceramic tiles, smaller versions of the same tiles that protectively float over the paper walls of the house. Inside the foyer and a left a turn down the hallway is a small garden the size of a ceramic claw bathtub. It is a garden intended to be observed through an ...[more]

Discovery and delight: Tad Jusczyk’s long road to Venice

Tuesday, 1 November 2011

Tad Jusczyk gave everyone at Shepley a remarkable new perspective as he journeyed from Xi’an to Venice this past summer as Shepley Bulfinch’s inaugural Howe Traveling Fellow. As Tad traveled we shared his discoveries and observations on his blog, The Long Road to Venice. Since his return, they have enriched our design dialogue.

His journeys were also documented in Tour de Force, a Boston Society of Architects’ online feature and slideshow.

The Howe Traveling Fellowship is a grant for travel and exploration for Shepley Bulfinch staff, supported by the firm to honor ...[more]

Design notes: the 2014 Fellowship poster

Thursday, 13 February 2014

In 1997, Shepley Bulfinch established a ten-week Summer Design Fellowship, which is open to all students who are, at date of submission, enrolled in an accredited professional degree program in the field of architecture. As part of our promotion of the annual fellowship, posters are mailed to accredited architecture schools across North America.

For the past five years we have worked to elevate the quality and exposure of the Summer Design Fellowship, and the poster has been an instrumental part of that. Since 2010, we have posed compelling questions for applicants to answer and have commissioned posters by noted graphic designers including Michael Bierut of Pentagram; Experimental Jetset; Non-Format; ...[more]

Tuesday, 20 March 2012

I want to share some notes on the 2012 Summer Design Fellowship poster and some thoughts on design communication. But before I do here’s just a brief introduction for those who are new to the program. Years ago the firm established a ten-week paid Design Fellowship for an exceptional architecture student to work with us over the summer. The application is open to all students who are, at date of submission, enrolled in an accredited professional degree program in the field of architecture.
