As a participant in Herman Miller’s Spring 2009 Higher Education Leadership Roundtable, I found the opportunity to sit and talk with thought leaders across the spectrum of higher education to be highly stimulating.

We spent two days discussing scenarios for learning that had been developed in 2005 and summarized in Herman Miller’s Outlook for Learning white paper – which ones were still valid, which ones had not come to pass, which ones were we still waiting for? It seems like every new design tool and technology comes with a promise to help us work more efficiently and more effectively. Childrens Hosp of Mich Specialty Ctr - DetroitLEED certification for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center-Detroit sends a powerful message: helping children grow up healthy starts with a healthy environment. The Center, which was completed in 2012, is the first LEED-certified project on the hospital’s urban campus.

Detroit’s new pediatric specialty care center opens

Detroit celebrated its new home for pediatric specialty care today with blowing bubbles, a youth chorus, and a marching band at the Grand Opening of Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center on the campus of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC).

The $43 million specialty center represents the first completed structure following Vanguard Health Systems’ acquisition of DMC and marks the first major expansion for the campus in nearly 30 years.

Construction milestone for Children’s Hospital of Michigan

In a ceremony earlier today at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan, the final steel beam was raised to the top of the new Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center-Detroit.

Children’s Hospital of Michigan President Herman Gray, MD, provided an update on the specialty center’s progress. DMC President and CEO Mike Duggan joined Dr. Gray in signing the final beam. The program concluded with the traditional placement of the beam with a live evergreen tree on top of the new building.

Detroit Medical Center broke ground today for the new Specialty Center for Children’s Hospital of Michigan in a ceremony attended by federal, state, and regional legislators and community leaders. They joined Vanguard Health System’s Vice President Keith Pitts, Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan, and Children’s Hospital of Michigan President Herman Gray, MD, for the event.

Shepley Bulfinch presented with award for Tennessee library

Shepley Bulfinch was presented with the Palladio Award on March 7 at the annual Traditional Building Conference in Boston. The award was presented for the Paul Barret, Jr, Library at Rhodes College in Memphis, which Shepley Bulfinch designed in association with the Virginia firm of Hanbury Evans Wright and Vlattas.

The project was one of ten recognized in the sixth annual Palladio Awards competition for outstanding work in traditional design. It will be featured in the June 2007 issue of Traditional Building magazine.
