WASHINGTON, DC – Sherman Hospital has received a $956,000 award from the US Department of Energy for its geothermal lake at the hospital’s new campus in Elgin, Illinois. The hospital is scheduled to open at the end of the year. In announcing the receipt of the award today, Sherman president and CEO Rick Floyd said, “Sherman Health is honored to receive this award… Our lake is environmentally sound, and we look forward to supporting green energy initiatives in our community and throughout the country.”
The award was funded through the FY08 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, and was designated as one of 117 congressionally directed projects within the Department’s Office ...[more]

ELGIN, IL – The innovative geothermal system at Sherman Hospital, now under construction in Elgin, Illinois, is drawing national and regional press attention this month.
The operational and economic value of the geothermal system, as well as the technology behind it, are discussed in July’s Healthcare Design feature, “Running Hot and Cold”, by Shepley Bulfinch Principal Jonathan Gyory. Shorter pieces have run in the Chicago Tribune and other regional press.

The US Green Building Council has awarded LEED Gold Certification to The Rebecca M. Sykes Wellness Center at Phillips Academy. It is the second LEED-certified building on the school’s Andover, Massachusetts, campus.
The sustainable design of the 17,000 square foot center reinforces the Center’s emphasis on health and well-being. “This is another testament to this beautiful new Wellness Center supporting Andover’s larger initiatives in individual and community health,” said Phillips Academy Medical Director Dr. Amy Patel.

Sometimes the best lesson in environmental responsibility on campus is the academic building around you.
For Colby College, its commitment to sustainable design and practice was affirmed when the Davis Science Center received LEED Gold Certification this fall from the US Green Building Council.
The Center is Shepley Bulfinch’s eighth project to be LEED Gold Certified.

The signature red stair of the new Frederick Berry Library and Learning Commons at Salem State is prominently featured in American Libraries’ 2014 Library Design Showcase, which appears in the magazine’s September/October issue.
The floating form of the cantilevered stair reinforces the emphasis of the design on space and openness. A pleated glass wall overlooks the new academic quad, which conceals a 48-well geothermal field below.

The DEC Center at Philadelphia University has received LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council and a shout-out in two design publications.
“Philadelphia University is a leader in both sustainability education and practices on our campus,” said university president Stephen Spinelli Jr. “These are critically important issues in the 21st century.”
