University College Cork library wins architecture award

boole_lib_corkCHICAGO, IL – Boole Library, the postgraduate research facility at University College Cork, Ireland, has received a 2008 International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

Built on the site of an ancient settlement the Library’s red sandstone exterior is a contemporary continuation of the settlement’s stone wall, while copper cladding and glass complete the façade. The design also responds to several massive specimen trees from the Victorian botanical garden that once occupied the site. University of New Mexico dedicates Engineering Center

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Collaboration and research were key words at the dedication of the University of New Mexico’s Centennial Engineering Center today where Figaro, a student-built robot, cut the ceremonial ribbon.

“The Centennial Engineering Center will enable us to serve students in engineering and CS by giving them the hands-on experiences that are critical for the 21st century,” said Dean Joseph Cecchi in remarks to 400 invited guests. “The Center will increase the School’s capacity for innovation, multidisciplinary research, developing patents, creating new businesses, and economic growth.”

Princeton Review rankings confirm power of great library design

PRINCETON, NJ – The result of the Princeton Review’s survey of 120,000 students at 368 top US colleges and universities ranked four campuses with recent or current Shepley-designed libraries on its “Best Library” list. The four are Princeton (#2), Duke (#3), Furman (#13), and Colgate (#18) universities.

Duke Library at Furman University was awarded LEED Gold certification by the US Green Building Council earlier this year, and the latest phase of the renovation of Perkins Library at Duke University is scheduled for completion at the end of the summer

Agnes Scott College in Decatur, where the firm’s projects include the school’s science center, was ranked 19th in “Best Classroom Experience”.

University library opens in Ireland

boole_lib_corkCork, Ireland – Mary Hanafin, TD, Ireland’s Minister for Education and Science, dedicated the newly expanded and renovated Boole Library, Ireland’s leading research institute, today in a ceremony at University College Cork. In her remarks, the Minister called the project a “great example of Ireland’s commitment to upgrading facilities for research nationwide.”

This addition and renovation, which includes a new postgraduate research library, significantly expands and upgrades Boole , already the largest library outside Dublin, with integrated technologies, as well as additional conservation, reading, and exhibition space.

Architectural materials reinforce the emotional perception of the building in space. An embracing curve of curtainwall, glowing in the heart of the healthcare campus, holds the visitor and public waiting spaces in tight connection to the healing gardens inside and out.

A distinctive brick and punched window composition expresses the rectangular form of the utilitarian spaces behind the curving wall. The building meets the ground plane supported strongly with precast concrete panels with ashlar pattern.

University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center opens, offers advanced cardiac care

ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Michigan held opening ceremonies for its new 420,000 s.f., $215 million Cardiovascular Center (CVC), a centerpiece of the University of Michigan (U-M) Health System campus. The CVC receives its first patients on June 11.

The CVC provides one-stop access to most of the University’s adult heart and vascular care, and allow U-M specialists from different disciplines to work together as never before.

The Center was designed with two guiding principles: creating an inclusive learning and healing environment for everyone from doctors and patients to visitors; and creating connections through medicine, art, gardens and the natural world.
