Library of the Future: Design study promotes flexible, future learning environments for mid-century modern building

As we continue to celebrate our military servicemen and women – veteran and active-duty – this week, we wanted to highlight a project of historic significance for our country. The Library of the Future study for McDermott Library initiates a forward-looking, adaptable learning and research environment at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Its recommendations rejuvenate Walter Netsch’s 59-year-old campus design vision, and position the library as the intellectual heart of The Academy.

Yin Liu named 2015 Summer Design Fellow

Yin Liu - SDF submissionShepley Bulfinch welcomes Rhode Island School of Design architecture student Yin Liu, who is spending ten weeks this summer in Boston as the firm’s 2015 Summer Design Fellow. So far, she’s been working with teams on a range of design challenges, including the current renovation of the Boston office.

As a designer, Yin is drawn to the temporal qualities of space, as uses and forms shift over time. This is an area she hopes to explore in her thesis project next year, as she explores the development of tools and technologies that track how buildings are developed ...[more]

Interior Design honors for Brody Learning Commons

When Interior Design magazine named Brody Learning Commons an honoree in the 2013 Best of Year Awards last week, it honored a place that the Johns Hopkins University community has called home – and nicknamed the BLC – since its doors opened in the fall of 2012.

Metrics and the design of collaborative environments

A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education (“Scientific Discovery, Inspired by a Walk to the Restroom”) made the argument that locating key support facilities has a role in fostering collaborative research environments.

As a design researcher, whenever I read a piece like this that cites research without providing citations or references, I become concerned about the quality of the evidence.

“Collaboration Station,” a feature in the May 2011 issue of University Business magazine, discusses the design of collaborative study spaces in higher education. Ed Gomes of Duke University talks about the Duke Link, the interactive teaching and learning space designed by Shepley Bulfinch which opened in 2008, noting that the project “was about creating an atmosphere in which people can experiment.”

This summer, we continued to push further by hosting our Third Annual Design Share. In addition to devoting time to connect internally on some of our recent projects, we invited experts from multiple disciplines outside the AEC industry to discuss their processes and practices.
