Hesburgh Library renovation emphasizes connectivity

Notre Dame announced the start of the interior renovation of the University’s iconic Hesburgh Library later this month, at the end of a year in which the Library celebrated its 50th anniversary.

“The 50th anniversary gave us the opportunity to both celebrate a remarkable past and build upon this foundation to create a leading research library for the 21st century,” said Notre Dame president Rev. John I. Jenkins, CSC. “Now is the time to make a transformational leap forward through a bold renovation that will keep Hesburgh Library the centerpiece of Notre Dame’s intellectual pursuits and an enduring symbol of our academic excellence.”

In the works: Amherst College renovation underway

Under construction - Seligman HouseThe transformation of a former Amherst College fraternity house near the main campus into a 44-bed residence hall is now underway, with plans to open in the 2013-2014 academic year.

The 21,000 square foot renovation and expansion of Seligman House, which was built in 1921, preserves the character of the original building and adds a three-story wing that complements it aesthetically. Saint Peter’s College breaks ground on student center

Saint Peter’s College broke ground on the MacMahon Student Center October 26 in a ceremony attended by members of the college community and civic and political leaders.

In his remarks, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healey noted that the 84,000 s.f. building would be transformative not only as Saint Peter’s first student center, but also in its wider role in the revitalization of McGinley Square and Jersey City.

Upgrading the hospital environment

The latest issue of Healthcare Building Ideas features an interview with healthcare architects Angela Watson and David Meek. In “Systems for Upgrading the Hospital Environment,” this issue’s Build It Right feature, Angela and David discuss recent developments in healthcare design, including strategies for waste management and changing perspectives on indoor air quality for hospitals.

Angela and David’s recent project at Concord Hospital in New Hampshire received LEED certification in 2009, the first hospital in northern New England to do so.
