The University of Houston’s new Health and Biomedical Sciences Building 2 is well underway, and set to be completed in late 2017. The new, multi-disciplinary facility that will feature specialized research space, labs, offices, an expanded library, and an integrated healthcare clinic to serve the University of Houston community as well as surrounding community members. These come in response to a growing set of expectations for higher education coming from both the academic community and society at large. Driven by technological change and increasingly diverse populations, the academy has risen to meet these expectations with a variety of cross-disciplinary problem-based research efforts, new curricula, novel teaching methods and links to the commercial sector. If we build it, will they come? This was one of the many questions posed this spring at the Learning Spaces Collaboratory Forum. Shepley Bulfinch, along with other national design and academic leaders, was invited to participate in a series of roundtables, concluding with a national forum in Washington, D.C. The challenge was lofty: to discuss and determine what is “now and next” in classroom design and instruction.

IDEA Center breaks ground at Austin College

Austin College president Marjorie Hass welcomed trustees, distinguished alumni, and other guests at a June 3 groundbreaking ceremony for the IDEA Center, the Sherman, Texas, college’s new science and technology complex.

Twelve years in the planning, the 103,000 s.f. Center will emphasize breaking down boundaries between disciplines, housing the departments of physics, chemistry, biology, environmental studies, math, and computer science in one facility. A centerpiece of the new academic building is a domed observatory, with a 24″ telescope that will be among the best among the country’s liberal arts institutions.

Transdisciplinary space for Philadelphia University

Shepley Bulfinch is designing a home for Philadelphia University’s new College of Design, Engineering, and Commerce, which has just been announced.

The new academic building will house an ambitious program, defined by the university as a “revolutionary, transdisciplinary curriculum that retains the core learning of each discipline while forging new collaborations between the fields of design, engineering, and business.”

The new 40,000 s.f. building will be located near two other Shepley Bulfinch projects on the Philadelphia University campus: Gutman Library (1993) and Kanbar Campus Center (2006). The firm’s other recent cross-disciplinary learning environments in higher education ...[more]

Behind the Wall: Bob Simmons

Principal Bob Simmons, AIA, says higher education is akin to urban planning, which makes it a nice work space to inhabit. “The client is the steward of the whole village, and is sensitive to how each building affects not only its village, but the world.”

This interest in a holistic approach to uncover the essence of design is something Bob gravitated toward early on, and continues to bring to the forefront in his work today. Having recently joined Shepley Bulfinch, he is focused on expanding projects within his niche – student life and dining – to produce a more comprehensive portfolio in the higher education sector.

Planning for Collections: Balancing Digital Trends, Physical Realities, and Pedagogy

Digital technologies, changing scholarship habits, spatial constraints, and economic challenges are prompting many institutions to dramatically change how their physical collections (e.g., books, maps, art, biological samples, pottery fragments) are stored, accessed, displayed, and consumed. With the digital revolution, what physical things still are important pedagogically for an academic institution?
