As designers it’s often hard to for us to articulate the power of great design to new clients. It’s exciting when the impact of design is recognized and called out by users, as we saw in a recent assessment of Duke University’s Link, the Duke Teaching and Learning Center that opened in the lower level of Perkins Library in August 2008. MILWAUKEE, WI – In an article published in today’s Business Journal of Milwaukee, Law School Dean Joseph Kearney described the new law school, Eckstein Hall, as a building that advances the unique role of the law school as an “intellectual commons and a space for the development of law and public policy”.
The unique integration of the law school library creates the sense of a “library without borders” by making it accessible from all levels of the school.
Ralph Jackson, Principal for Design, described Zilber Forum, the buidling’s four-story atrium, as its most stunning space and one designed to foster a collaborative learning environment.

If we build it, will they come? This was one of the many questions posed this spring at the Learning Spaces Collaboratory Forum. Shepley Bulfinch, along with other national design and academic leaders, was invited to participate in a series of roundtables, concluding with a national forum in Washington, D.C. The challenge was lofty: to discuss and determine what is “now and next” in classroom design and instruction.

19th century academic libraries reflected the pedagogy and culture of the period: formal buildings with grand spaces and quiet, well-appointed reading rooms. By the middle of the 20th century these buildings faced a new challenge. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Illinois Tech President John Anderson on Friday to announce that Shepley Bulfinch and John Ronan Architects will program and design the planned Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship on the University’s Mies van der Rohe campus.
Developing the program for the Institute means that Shepley will collaborate with IIT’s stakeholders and the design architect to explore, evaluate, and synthesize ways to create a new building type uniquely suited to IIT’s culture of research, collaboration, and invention.
Construction on the $40 million, 100,000 square-foot facility could begin as early as the summer of 2015 with a completion date anticipated in 2017.
