Shepley Bulfinch to design Boston Children’s Hospital tower

Conceptual sketch_BCH clinical tower_150 pxShepley Bulfinch, a national leader in pediatric healthcare design, has been selected to design the new clinical care tower for Boston Children’s Hospital. The 11-story, 500,000 square foot building on the Longwood Medical Area campus is the largest in the hospital’s history.

Children's Hospital Boston front-and-center in Healthcare Design

An article by Shepley Bulfinch principal William Mead discussed communication and the role design of the Main South expansion at Children’s Hospital Boston in the July 2007 issue of Healthcare Design magazine.

The 11-story, 250,000 s.f. expansion was designed to foster communications among hospital staff, as well as with patients, and families, an aspect of particular importance in the pediatric acute care environment.

The facility, which opened in 2005, received the 2006 Modern Healthcare Award of Excellence. It incorporates sophisticated medical technology, including the innovative MROR, which bring magnetic resonance imaging technology into the surgical suite.

Shepley Bulfinch’s expansion project for Children’s Hospital Boston was named one of 12 winners of Modern Healthcare’s Award of Excellence in its 21st Annual Design Awards. The 240,000 s.f. project laterally expanded the functions of the hospital’s main building, which the firm designed in 1985, to contiguous space in the new building.

BSA Design AwardsTwo Shepley Bulfinch projects were recognized for their design at the Boston Society of Architects’ 2014 Design Awards Gala on January 29.

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven took home an honor award for healthcare facility design. Director Cathy Lange accepted the ‘Hobson’ for the project team at last week’s ceremony.

In their remarks, the design jury noted how “the architect delivered with clean, simple, and timeless design… The exterior design is very sensitive, with arrays of windows, terracotta screens, and glass stair towers combining for an elegant urban expression.”

Beam me up: construction begins for Children’s Hospital of Michigan

The New Children's Hospital of MichiganA beam signing ceremony today signaled the official start of construction on the new Children’s Hospital of Michigan in the heart of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Midtown Detroit campus. Patients, their families, community members, and DMC executives and staff joined the celebration, inscribing messages and well wishes on the 1.65 ton beam, which was placed as the cornerstone of this project.

The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan will house pediatric researchers, clinicians and innovators in heart health, emergency medicine, critical care, neonatology, hematology/oncology, nephrology and other disciplines. ...[more]

Ground broken for Oishei Children’s Hospital

Oishei Children's HospitalHealth care for the children and families of Western New York took a major leap forward October 8, as Kaleida Health held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, designed by Shepley Bulfinch. The new hospital will replace the current Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.

Physicians, employees, donors, elected officials, and other dignitaries were on hand to kick off construction on the new $270 million facility. Lt. Governor Robert Duffy was the event’s keynote speaker.
