Shepley Bulfinch architects announced today that Bailey Architects of Houston has joined their growing national design practice. Adding a Houston office gives Shepley Bulfinch a strong presence in Texas, where significant growth is projected in the healthcare and education sectors, and greater visibility in Houston, one of the country’s fastest-growing cities.
Bailey Architects is now the Houston office of Shepley Bulfinch. The acquisition cements a long-standing relationship that spans more than a decade. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Illinois Tech President John Anderson on Friday to announce that Shepley Bulfinch and John Ronan Architects will program and design the planned Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship on the University’s Mies van der Rohe campus.
Developing the program for the Institute means that Shepley will collaborate with IIT’s stakeholders and the design architect to explore, evaluate, and synthesize ways to create a new building type uniquely suited to IIT’s culture of research, collaboration, and invention.
Construction on the $40 million, 100,000 square-foot facility could begin as early as the summer of 2015 with a completion date anticipated in 2017.

Shepley Bulfinch was honored as one of 2011’s Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts in an event hosted by the Boston Business Journal and the Commonwealth Institute earlier today to honor Massachusetts’ largest women-led companies and their impact on the state’s economy.
Carole Wedge, who has been Shepley’s president since 2004, was on hand to receive the award.
Earlier this year, the firm was honored by the American Institute of Architects in the AIA’s Diversity Recognition Program.
The 100 firms honored today span the spectrum of business sectors, and included the TJX Companies, Sonesta International Hotels, and Constant Contact.
