Building green: International Green Construction Code

Thursday, 5 April 2012

Last week’s publication of the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC) marks a major milestone in sustainable design, construction, and operations, as we shift from an incentive-based approach toward a regulatory one.

While current building codes were developed to protect life and safety of present building occupants, the IgCC expands its purview to protect the environment on behalf of the wider community, both present and future.  This new overlay code builds on current systems of voluntary design guidelines and goals, moving toward mandatory adherence to principles of sustainable ...[more]

The smart design behind Salem State’s floating stair

Thursday, 12 December 2013

Smart design stands on its own – sometimes literally.

That’s the case at Salem State University’s Berry Library: the design thinking behind the library’s open stair gets top billing in “16 smart solutions for architects, engineers, and contractors,” a feature in the December issue of Building Design & Construction.

The feature outlines the design challenge and the solution developed by Shepley Bulfinch and engineering firm SGH, working together to create the stair’s elegant floating form.

Wednesday, 27 July 2011

“We’re #27.” OK, it may not trip off the tongue, but it sounds pretty good to us.

Library of the Future: Design study promotes flexible, future learning environments for mid-century modern building

Wednesday, 15 November 2017

By: Kelly Brubaker

As we continue to celebrate our military servicemen and women – veteran and active-duty – this week, we wanted to highlight a project of historic significance for our country. The Library of the Future study for McDermott Library initiates a forward-looking, adaptable learning and research environment at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Its recommendations rejuvenate Walter Netsch’s 59-year-old campus design vision, and position the library as the intellectual heart of The Academy.

Through a series of workshops and interviews with the Library Steering Committee and staff, Academy faculty and cadets, we developed proposals for a phased renovation and expansion of the library with partner ...[more]

Green Building Council Award for Smilow Cancer Hospital

Wednesday, 27 July 2011

Creating an environment that promotes healing complements the development and practice of treatments that heal. That was the thinking behind the design of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital, which has received an Award of Merit in the Connecticut Green Building Council’s (CTGBC) 2011 Green Building Design Awards. Norman Roth, Yale-New Haven’s Senior Vice President of Administration, accepted the award at the June 21 ceremony in New Haven.

The hospital was designed by Shepley Bulfinch and landscape architects Towers|Golde, and built by Turner Construction.

Eight years in the making, the 516,000 square foot cancer hospital ...[more]
