Smilow Cancer Hospital receives Green Business Award

Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital has been named a winner in the Connecticut Green Business Awards. The cancer hospital, which began seeing its first patients late last year, took top honors in the “New Construction” category.

Smilow Cancer Hospital is one of 25 businesses, organizations, and individuals recognized with Green Business Awards, which were announced in a feature in the January issue of the Connecticut Business News Journal. Merzproject wins 2009 Interior Design award

merzproject_bshNEW YORK, NY – The stellar year for merzproject, a studio of Shepley Bulfinch, continued on December 3, when it was named one of the winners of Interior Design Magazine’s Best of 2009 in a celebration at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

At the event, merzproject was presented with a Merit Award in the “Showroom” category for the 12,000 s.f. B/S/H Gallery and Training Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. Mass General/North Shore receives AGC merit award

BOSTON, MA – The Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care was recognized with a Merit Award last night at the 2009 Build New England Awards by AGC of Massachusetts, the Association of Commercial and Institutional Builders. Principal Angela Watson represented the firm at the ceremony.

Shepley Bulfinch and general contractor Walsh Brothers were cited for “the very best in collaboration” on an ambitious project constrained by a tight schedule and budget.

The ambulatory care facility, which also houses the North Shore Cancer Center, is located just off Route 128 in Danvers. The 122,000 square foot facility opened in May 2009.

Holocaust and Human Rights Center receives national award

AUGUSTA, ME – The Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine received national honors from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) today when they were presented with a 2009 award for Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel (IDEAS2). The project was one of eleven honored by the AISC as part of its annual nationwide recognition of outstanding achievements in engineering and architecture on structural steel projects.

ecoFLEX wins 2009 Unbuilt Architecture Award

A Shepley Bulfinch design team has won a prestigious 2009 Unbuilt Architecture Design Award from the Boston Society of Architects.

ecoFLEX, the winning project, was one of ten winning entries chosen from more than 90 submissions in the BSA’s Unbuilt Architecture Design Awards program, which is open to architects from around the world. It was designed for the Tall Emblem Structure competition in Dubai earlier this year.

The Shepley Bulfinch design team of Angela Watson, Luke Voiland, Lauren Deck, and Allan Donnelly, joined by Paul Kassabian of Simpson Gumpertz and Heger, will be honored in November at the BSA Jurors’ Forum during the Build Boston, where the winning boards will be displayed.

Geothermal lake wins $956k US Department of Energy award

WASHINGTON, DC – Sherman Hospital has received a $956,000 award from the US Department of Energy for its geothermal lake at the hospital’s new campus in Elgin, Illinois. The hospital is scheduled to open at the end of the year. In announcing the receipt of the award today, Sherman president and CEO Rick Floyd said, “Sherman Health is honored to receive this award… Our lake is environmentally sound, and we look forward to supporting green energy initiatives in our community and throughout the country.”

The award was funded through the FY08 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, and was designated as one of 117 congressionally directed projects within the Department’s Office ...[more]

University College Cork library wins architecture award

boole_lib_corkCHICAGO, IL – Boole Library, the postgraduate research facility at University College Cork, Ireland, has received a 2008 International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

Built on the site of an ancient settlement the Library’s red sandstone exterior is a contemporary continuation of the settlement’s stone wall, while copper cladding and glass complete the façade. The design also responds to several massive specimen trees from the Victorian botanical garden that once occupied the site. The new Shepley Bulfinch website, designed by Fuego5, LLC, received a “Best in Class” award for its design, development, and implementation by the Interactive Media Awards (IMA), sponsored by the Interactive Media Council. In a format that is clear and easy to navigate, the site provides visitors with detailed information about the firm’s projects, awards, and history, as well as the design professionals and vision that are among its greatest assets.
