IDEA Center observatoryAustin College’s new IDEA Center has received LEED Gold certification, and the fact that it is the first LEED Certified building on the college’s Sherman, Texas, campus is no coincidence.

The IDEA (Inquiry, Discovery, Entrepreneurship, Access) Center embodies the College’s long-standing leadership in science education and its commitment to a new campus standard for environmentally responsive buildings. The Center, which opened its doors at the start of the current academic year, is home to the Departments of Math, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, and Physics. IDEA Center dedication - Nov 8, 2013The recent dedication of Austin College’s IDEA Center in Sherman, Texas, celebrated the realization of the College’s long-standing vision for an interdisciplinary home for the sciences.

“The beautiful building behind me – and the living laboratory around its exterior – gives us good reason to celebrate,” said Austin College president Marjorie Hass before a gathering of trustees, donors, and the wider campus community.

Austin breaks ground on new Central Library

Groundbreaking - Austin Central Library
The City of Austin, Texas, broke ground today on its new Central Library, establishing a major civic presence and community gathering space in the heart of the city’s redeveloped Seaholm district. The library, which is scheduled for completion in 2016, is designed by the architectural joint venture of Lake|Flato and Shepley Bulfinch.

IDEA Center breaks ground at Austin College

Austin College president Marjorie Hass welcomed trustees, distinguished alumni, and other guests at a June 3 groundbreaking ceremony for the IDEA Center, the Sherman, Texas, college’s new science and technology complex.

Twelve years in the planning, the 103,000 s.f. Center will emphasize breaking down boundaries between disciplines, housing the departments of physics, chemistry, biology, environmental studies, math, and computer science in one facility. A centerpiece of the new academic building is a domed observatory, with a 24″ telescope that will be among the best among the country’s liberal arts institutions.

Shepley Bulfinch and Lake/Flato win Austin Public Library project

AUSTIN, TX – Austin, TX (December 11, 2008) – In their meeting today, the Austin City Council selected the team of Shepley Bulfinch and Lake|Flato to design the city’s new $90 million Central Library.

With 250,000 sf of space, the new library wil more than double the space of the city’s 110,000 sf John Henry Faulk Central Library, which was built in 1979.

As part of the design process, Austin Public Library in conjunction with the Library Commission and the Austin Public Library Foundation will actively seek citizen input through a series of public design charrettes. The library is scheduled to open in mid-2014.

AUSTIN, TX – The architecture team of Lake|Flato and Shepley Bulfinch was one of three finalists to present to Austin City Council on October 23 for the design and construction of the city’s new 250,000 sf Central Library.

Austin's New Central LibraryHow are public libraries evolving, and how do we design them today to accommodate changing demands and technologies?

Tackling that question was central to the design of the new Central Library for the city of Austin, Texas, which is featured in “Local Government Projects: Six Visionary Strategies” in the August issue of Building Design+Construction magazine.  As Shepley Bulfinch managing principal Sid Bowen notes in the article, “We want to the building to last 100 years, not just structurally, but functionally.”

The design team of Shepley Bulfinch of Boston and Lake|Flato Architects of San Antonio has begun schematic design for Austin’s New Central Library.

A destination and a city landmark in the making, the New Central Library will welcome residents to a facility that emphasizes the delivery of information in both electronic and book formats, and includes a mix of lively and contemplative spaces. Collections will be displayed to encourage discovery, supported by state-of-the-art technologies integrated throughout the facility.
