What trends can pediatric hospitals, staff, and patient families expect to see in NICU design? Family-forward design and strategies for addressing market and functional pressures.
Several of the sessions at the Gravens Conference on neonatal intensive care earlier this month focused on strategies for enhancing the NICU experience for parents and other family members. As a parent of a former NICU baby and now a healthcare architect for a firm with an extensive pediatric hospital portfolio, I found this heartening.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Garry Baker, former Principal, Chief Operating Officer, and member of the Board of Directors of Shepley Bulfinch, on February 18.
Garry was a leader of the firm and our healthcare practice. In a career spanning more than 45 years his major interest was in team management and long-range planning. Garry was known for his long-standing client relationships and his self-proclaimed passion for the “orchestration of the team.”

A beam signing ceremony today signaled the official start of construction on the new Children’s Hospital of Michigan in the heart of the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Midtown Detroit campus. Patients, their families, community members, and DMC executives and staff joined the celebration, inscribing messages and well wishes on the 1.65 ton beam, which was placed as the cornerstone of this project.
The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan will house pediatric researchers, clinicians and innovators in heart health, emergency medicine, critical care, neonatology, hematology/oncology, nephrology and other disciplines. ...[more]

The addition of a major wing to North Shore Community College’s McGee Building took a step forward this week as preparations for the start of construction got underway at the college’s Lynn, Massachusetts, campus.
The 37,000 square foot addition will provide ten new classrooms and a home for a consolidated Student Success Center and a Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment, as well as other academic and administrative facilities. It is anticipated that the $21 million project will take two years to complete.

The Hobson Award is the highest level of design award given annually by the Boston Society of Architects. The AIAS Chapter at MassArt and the BSA have fostered a wonderful, collaborative relationship over the past five years. This relationship led to a phone call last fall asking if our chapter would design and create the next Hobson award.
