We are saddened to announce the passing of Garry Baker, former Principal, Chief Operating Officer, and member of the Board of Directors of Shepley Bulfinch, on February 18.
Garry was a leader of the firm and our healthcare practice. In a career spanning more than 45 years his major interest was in team management and long-range planning. Garry was known for his long-standing client relationships and his self-proclaimed passion for the “orchestration of the team.”

A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony at Wabash College on January 30 marked the start of construction for Shepley Bulfinch’s re-design and renovation of Martindale Hall, the most prominent student residence on the Crawfordsville, Indiana, campus.
Speaking at the ceremony, Wabash President Gregory Hess celebrated the elevation of the quality of independent student housing for this small men’s college with the completion of a new six-unit residential life complex that added 136 new beds on the west part of the campus and the revitalization of 55-year old Martindale Hall.

Yale-New Haven Hospital has opened the newest specialized inpatient unit for bariatric surgery patients in southern New England, allowing the hospital’s Bariatric Center to deliver tailored care for patients undergoing life-changing surgery. The dedicated 15-bed unit designed by Shepley Bulfinch is located on the hospital’s Saint Raphael’s Campus and opened with a ribbon-cutting on January 5.
The bariatric unit is an added and important resource to Yale-New Haven’s team of bariatric surgeons. In all sizes and colors, they congregate on monitors, desktops, and walls. We use them as reminders to ourselves and others. They help us think and synthesize.
Most of all, they help us communicate and collaborate with each other and our clients. Whether bent into an impromptu stair model or used in a client workshop, they are part of our design process.

What can seem simple or mundane to us, can be magical through the eyes of a child. How often do we, as designers, grab our sketchbooks every day? We all use them in different ways: some of our sketchbooks are filled with meticulous drawings. Others, like mine, have pages filled with meeting notes and project to-do lists, with the occasional reminder to pick up a black shirt to complete a Halloween costume.
