LEED Gold for Saint-Gobain research facility

Saint-Gobain’s expanded research development facility in Northborough, Massachusetts, has received LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council.  Sustainable project highlights include a heat recovery wheel and a pressurized raised-floor system that promotes equal distribution of tempered air in the building.

The facility, which is part of Saint-Gobain’s Massachusetts research campus, was completed in 2009. The project makes ample use of building products from Saint-Gobain and its CertainTeed and ADFORS subsidiaries, from glass and roofing to adhesives, wallboard, and insulation. A.J. Martini of Winchester, Massachusetts, was the project’s construction manager.

Beauty may be more than skin deep, but when you’re talking about energy-efficient buildings, it starts with the building envelope.  Strategies for detailing and specifying for high-performance building enclosures are discussed in “Energy performance starts at the building envelope,” in the December 2011 issue of Building Design + Construction (BD+C).

The article features three members of Shepley Bulfinch’s in-house Technical Advisory Council – Greta Eckhardt, Mark Finneral, and Dan Salive – among the design and construction professionals who offer their insights and strategies regarding thermal performance and materials.

Chilled beams: systems and strategies

As a response to the ongoing quest to reduce energy consumption, chilled beams are experiencing a surge in popularity, according to “Chill Out: A look at passive and active chilled-beam systems,” which appears in the current issue of eco-structure magazine. In the article, Shepley Bulfinch’s Jonathan Baron discusses the importance of understanding a building’s thermal dynamics and the environments for which chilled beam systems are best suited.

Xavier’s new digs: dorm terrace is dining hall’s green roof

Bishop Fenwick Place, Xavier University’s new residential and dining complex, was dedicated last month in a ceremony that celebrated the transformational residence and dining complex on the Cincinnati campus.

Fenwick Place is home to 535 sophomores with suite-style living in four connected wings that rise above a green terrace. The terrace also serves as the roof of Hoff Dining Commons, the university’s new central dining facility. LEED Gold certification for University of New Mexico

The University of New Mexico’s Science and Math Learning Center in Albuquerque has received LEEDGold certification from the US Green Building Council.

The LEED for Schools rating system under which it was certified addresses core learning areas and requires higher performance standards for air quality, acoustics, daylighting, and thermal comfort than other LEED programs.

The project deploys a wide range of sustainable design strategies and techniques that focus on enhancing the learning environment and fulfills the University’s commitment to establishing a green footprint.

Smilow Cancer Hospital receives LEED certification

The US Green Building Council has awarded LEED® certification to Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven in recognition of the hospital’s successful sustainable design and construction strategies. The 516,000 square foot hospital is located in downtown New Haven.

When planning for Smilow began in 2002, sustainable strategies, including LEED certification, were not widely considered attainable in healthcare, given their high energy demands and other perceived constraints. Colorado College celebrates dynamic new dining space

Colorado College marked the renovation of the college’s dining facilities at the Worner Center with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony today on the Center’s south patio. President Jill Tiefenthaler welcomed guests to the event, which was followed by a tour of Rastall Hall.

The renovation has transformed the tired facility into a bright, dynamic social space for Colorado College that is both welcoming and energy-efficient. Central to the project’s success are new serveries with Energy Star-rated equipment and an easy-to-navigate layout. An interactive flat-screen monitors energy consumption in the building.

Space utilization as a sustainable strategy

Sometimes the most sustainable strategies in higher education are hidden in plain view. That’s Annie Newman’s point in her article “Do more, build less,” which appears as an online exclusive in the July 2011 issue of University Business magazine.
