Rural Studio’s enduring lessons

It’s not all about you.

That was the first lesson I learned in architecture school. Kicking off my architectural education at Auburn with the Rural Studio showed me the power of selfless design and taught me other invaluable life and professional lessons. For more than 20 years, the Rural Studio program has given architecture students like me a hands-on education, designing and building homes and community structures for underserved communities in rural Alabama.

Matthew Bohne named 2014 Summer Design Fellow

Shepley Bulfinch has named Matthew Bohne as the firm’s 2014 Summer Design Fellow. Matt, who will begin his final year in the B.Arch./B.F.A. program at the Rhode Island School of Design, was selected from a highly competitive pool of candidates.

During his ten-week Fellowship in Shepley’s Boston office, he will be addressing a series of design challenges on a range of scales early in the planning and design process.

Matt’s architectural education is informed by his background in graphic design, using composition on a two-dimensional plane to clearly convey three-dimensional qualities. In the past year, he has explored designing through drawing, and the use of manual and digital drawing techniques ...[more]

Jonathan Baron named director at Shepley Bulfinch

Jonathan BaronJonathan Baron has been named a Director at Shepley Bulfinch, where he is one of the leaders of the firm’s national practice.

“Jonathan’s broad knowledge of high-performance building design and delivery has been a tremendous resource to his colleagues, our practice and to our clients,” said Shepley Bulfinch president Carole Wedge.

He has led a number of academic library projects through complex renovations and additions, including projects for George Mason University, Cal Poly, and the seven-phase renovation of Princeton University’s Firestone Library.

You could be Shepley Bulfinch’s next Summer Design Fellow. We’re now accepting applications for the 2014 Fellowship. The submission deadline is Friday, February 28, 2014, at 5:00 pm EST.

This highly competitive Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for a promising architecture student to spend the summer immersed in real design problems in our Boston design studio. We’re looking for applications from a diverse range of students and institutions. Past Fellows have come from architecture schools throughout the country, and several are now members of our architectural staff.

Carole WedgeShepley Bulfinch president Carole Wedge FAIA, LEED AP received the Award of Excellence at the 14th annual Women in Design Awards, which was hosted at the Architecture Boston Expo (ABX) this week.

Scott SlarskyShepley Bulfinch is pleased to welcome seminal design leader Scott Slarsky, who has joined the firm as a director.

In announcing the appointment, president Carole Wedge said, “Scott is an exciting new design voice for Shepley Bulfinch, with passion, vision, and a deep understanding of how design can provide clarity of purpose and mission during times of institutional growth and change.”

Amrita Raja selected as 2012 Summer Design Fellow

Shepley Bulfinch has named Amrita Raja as the firm’s 2012 Summer Design Fellow. Amrita, who was selected from a highly competitive field of more than 50 candidates, will spend ten weeks this summer immersed in design challenges in the firm’s Boston studio.

In selecting Amrita as this year’s Fellow, committee members cited the depth of expression in her work and her understanding and articulacy in discussing her design decisions and intent.
