Everyone in the design community is talking about Virtual Reality, and that’s not surprising. It seems like every new design tool and technology comes with a promise to help us work more efficiently and more effectively. As a rookie user, I have to say that my VR experience has opened my eyes to the future of design.

Duke University’s Rubenstein Library, which was dedicated in October following a two-year restoration and renovation, has received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council. It is the third Duke library project to be LEED Certified and the University’s seventh LEED Gold Certified building. The project’s most visible sustainable strategy was preserving the library building – one of the oldest academic structures on Duke’s West Campus – and elements of its 1948 and 1968 additions.

As its name promises, HBX Live is a virtual classroom designed to reproduce the intimacy and synchronous interaction of Harvard Business School’s famed case study method in a digital environment.
Participants from around the globe can log in concurrently and join real-time, case-based sessions with HBS faculty who teach from the HBX Live studio, located in the Boston-based facility of public broadcaster WGBH. In the custom-designed studio, a high-resolution video wall mimics the amphitheater-style seating of an HBS classroom, where up to 60 participants are displayed on individual screens simultaneously. Jennifer Donham Wells has been named to the newly created position of Vice President, Brand Strategy at Shepley Bulfinch.

If our design process isn’t lean, how do we expect our construction process to be? This was the focus of the Lean Construction Institute (LCI) New England Community of Practice event in June where a team of designers, construction managers, and MEP subcontractors shared their approach to an ideal preconstruction process. Shepley Bulfinch worked with Turner Construction, and MEP subcontractors SullyMac and Cannistraro to create a pull plan that allows them to manage information and decisions down to a weekly basis.
