Steve Erwin AIA, LEED API spent time a few weeks ago in Pittsburgh at SCUP 49, the national conference of the Society for College and University Planning. Many of the discussions circled around ideation and collaboration.

In one of the more thought-provoking sessions I attended, the focus was on how a small liberal arts school was using “entrepreneurial” processes to put a framework around collaborative and critical problem solving. Environmental honors for DEC Center

LEED GoldThe DEC Center at Philadelphia University has received LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council and a shout-out in two design publications.

“Philadelphia University is a leader in both sustainability education and practices on our campus,” said university president Stephen Spinelli Jr. “These are critically important issues in the 21st century.”

Some of the sustainable strategies that earned the DEC Center its LEED Gold Certification include its stormwater management system, heat-reducing green roof, water-efficient faucets and toilets, solar pre-heat of hot water, energy-efficient lighting, partial geothermal power from the University’s first ...[more]

Wabash College breaks ground on student housing project

Construction is now underway at Wabash College for a new 136-bed student housing complex on the College’s Crawfordsville, Indiana, campus. The $15 million plan includes the construction of two 38-bed halls, two 16-bed lodges, and two duplex-style townhomes with 12 beds each. Shepley Bulfinch designed the six-building complex.

The new housing, which will be sited along the campus’ west side, includes increased parking and links to the main campus through walkways and landscaping.

IDEA Center observatoryAustin College’s new IDEA Center has received LEED Gold certification, and the fact that it is the first LEED Certified building on the college’s Sherman, Texas, campus is no coincidence.

The IDEA (Inquiry, Discovery, Entrepreneurship, Access) Center embodies the College’s long-standing leadership in science education and its commitment to a new campus standard for environmentally responsive buildings. The Center, which opened its doors at the start of the current academic year, is home to the Departments of Math, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, and Physics. Shepley named program architect for IIT innovation institute

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Illinois Tech President John Anderson on Friday to announce that Shepley Bulfinch and John Ronan Architects will program and design the planned Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship on the University’s Mies van der Rohe campus.

Developing the program for the Institute means that Shepley will collaborate with IIT’s stakeholders and the design architect to explore, evaluate, and synthesize ways to create a new building type uniquely suited to IIT’s culture of research, collaboration, and invention.

Construction on the $40 million, 100,000 square-foot facility could begin as early as the summer of 2015 with a completion date anticipated in 2017.

On the one hand there is a fundamentalist movement in how we shape teaching and learning environments. There is a drive to get back to the basics. 2014 LSC Guide 21C LearningThe Link Teaching and Learning Center at Duke University is featured in “Planning for assessing 21st century spaces for 21st century learners,” which has been published by the Learning Spaces Collaboratory.

The guide offers strategies for academic institutions and designers as they seek to imagine, develop, and evaluate the success of contemporary learning environments. The guide illustrates how research findings are informing campus-based programmatic and pedagogical change, and the process of transforming physical spaces to respond to them.

The smart design behind Salem State’s floating stair

Smart design stands on its own – sometimes literally.

That’s the case at Salem State University’s Berry Library: the design thinking behind the library’s open stair gets top billing in “16 smart solutions for architects, engineers, and contractors,” a feature in the December issue of Building Design & Construction.

The feature outlines the design challenge and the solution developed by Shepley Bulfinch and engineering firm SGH, working together to create the stair’s elegant floating form.
