Designing for behavioral health care in the ED

Wednesday, 23 December 2015

Building Design+Construction - Dec 2015Behavioral health and opioid abuse cases are on the rise around the country, and emergency departments have to be prepared to handle the influx. How can smart design help hospitals segregate and staff EDs to handle this growing patient population?

Building Design+Construction magazine highlights Shepley Bulfinch’s design approach for a community hospital in eastern Connecticut in its “Smart Solutions” feature in the magazine’s December issue. For Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, Connecticut, Shepley Bulfinch’s ED layout allows for quick and flexible modification to create a five-room behavioral health component with a dedicated nursing station. The five rooms are fitted out for the population’s special needs, particularly concerning aggressive or suicidal behaviors.
