Shepley Bulfinch welcomes Rhode Island School of Design architecture student Yin Liu, who is spending ten weeks this summer in Boston as the firm’s 2015 Summer Design Fellow. So far, she’s been working with teams on a range of design challenges, including the current renovation of the Boston office.
As a designer, Yin is drawn to the temporal qualities of space, as uses and forms shift over time. This is an area she hopes to explore in her thesis project next year, as she explores the development of tools and technologies that track how buildings are developed and change in both the short and long term.
Yin will receive her B.Arch. from RISD next year. During her foundation year at RISD, she was drawn to architecture by its encouragement of critical thinking and the design process, which seeks to make order from disorder, applying an understanding of movement through time and space as design progresses from abstract concept to line, plane, and three-dimensional form.
Now in its 18th year, Shepley Bulfinch’s annual Summer Design Fellowship draws a diverse pool of candidates from top design schools across the country. A number of past Fellows have later joined Shepley Bulfinch’s design staff.
