The signature red stair of the new Frederick Berry Library and Learning Commons at Salem State is prominently featured in American Libraries’ 2014 Library Design Showcase, which appears in the magazine’s September/October issue.
The floating form of the cantilevered stair reinforces the emphasis of the design on space and openness. A pleated glass wall overlooks the new academic quad, which conceals a 48-well geothermal field below.
The library has been buzzing with activity since it opened its doors at the start of the 2013-14 academic year. It was dedicated this spring in a ceremony honoring former state senator Frederick Berry. The library is pursuing LEED Gold certification.
