Healthcare facility evaluation by design practitioners

8 July 2011

Design and Health: 7th World Congress & Exhibition, Boston, MA

Angela Watson, AIA, Principal, Shepley Bulfinch
Mardelle Shepley, FAIA, Director, Center for Health Systems & Design

Angela and Mardelle discuss practitioner-focused facility evaluation (PFE), the practice-integrated analysis of the effectiveness of the physical environment relative to users’ needs. These analyses are conducted¬†in order to understand design outcomes and inform future design projects.

Their presentation includes a discussion of the importance of conducting these evaluations in professional practice and the relationship between facility evaluation and evidence-based design. They offer examples of projects associated with four methods of PFEs:

- Triangulated studies (Concord Hospital ICU)
- Pre- and post-evaluation studies (North Shore Cancer Center)
- Programming integrated evaluations (Mass General/North Shore)
- Large survey studies (Hasbro Children’s Hospital)
