Healthcare facility evaluation by design practitioners

8 July 2011

Design and Health: 7th World Congress & Exhibition, Boston, MA

Angela Watson, AIA, Principal, Shepley Bulfinch
Mardelle Shepley, FAIA, Director, Center for Health Systems & Design

Angela and Mardelle discuss practitioner-focused facility evaluation (PFE), the practice-integrated analysis of the effectiveness of the physical environment relative to users’ needs. These analyses are conducted in order to understand design outcomes and inform future design projects.

Their presentation includes a discussion of the importance of conducting these evaluations in professional practice and the relationship between facility evaluation and evidence-based design. They offer examples of projects associated with four methods of PFEs:

- Triangulated studies (Concord Hospital ICU)
- Pre- and post-evaluation studies (North Shore Cancer Center)
- Programming integrated evaluations (Mass General/North Shore)
- Large survey studies (Hasbro Children’s Hospital)
