Magazine celebrates Shepley, innovating for 135 years

Friday, 10 April 2009

A profile of Shepley Bulfinch in this month’s issue of Traditional Building magazine may discuss the firm’s 135-year history, but it leaves no doubt: Shepley is looking toward the future.

The feature, “Building for the Long Haul”, makes clear from the outset that the firm’s reputation is based on its responsive, client-focused design. In the words of principal Tom Kearns, “We collaborate with many of the best minds and clients, so we’re very exposed to what’s going on in the built world.”

Central to the article is a discussion of adapting historic structures or designing new facilities in historic settings to meet 21st century requirements. Principal Ralph Jackson noted, “What’s beginning to happen is that the kinds of projects they ask for express different aspirations internally – where they want a technologically informed community of shared interest – from the exterior character which anchors the building to a set of timeless values and ambitions.”
